Season Guide
Winter in Nara
During winter, Nara reveals a tranquil charm, accompanied by crisp and dry air.

Weather
The weather in Nara is generally cold, dry, and relatively sunny. Daily temperatures range from 1°C to 10°C, and can occasionally drop below 0°C at night or during the early morning.
-
December (Early Winter)
-
Average Temperature: 3°C – 11°C
-
Characteristics: The air begins to bite, especially at night. Rainfall is rare, and sunny weather predominates.
-
-
January (Coldest Month)
-
Average Temperature: 1°C – 8°C
-
Characteristics: Peak cold. Fairly strong, dry winds blow in from the surrounding mountains.
-
-
February (Late Winter)
-
Average Temperature: 1°C – 9°C
-
Characteristics: Temperatures remain very cold, but daylight hours gradually begin to lengthen.
-
-
Low Frequency: Nara is not considered a heavy snowfall area (snow country). Snow usually falls only a few times throughout the winter season (primarily in January and February).
Activities
-
Interacting with Nara Deer: The deer remain active in winter with their thick winter coats. Buy senbei (deer crackers) from official vendors. Keep paper maps or stretchy items inside your bag so the deer don't chew on them.
-
Join Iconic Winter Festivals:
-
Wakakusa Yamayaki (4th Sunday of January): The burning of the dead grass on Mount Wakakusa, accompanied by a fireworks display.
-
Nara Rurie (February/March): A blue light illumination pathway connecting Kasuga Taisha, Kofuku-ji, and Todai-ji.
-
-
Temples During Light Rain/Dusting of Snow: Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at Kasuga Taisha and Todai-ji—the stone landscapes and old wooden roofs look exceptionally aesthetic when dusted with cold rain or a light snow.
-
Foamy Ramen (泡系 / Awakei Ramen): Enjoy a bowl of ramen with rich, savory broth to warm your body around Kintetsu-Nara Station.
-
Chagayu (Green Tea / Houjicha Porridge): A traditional Nara dish featuring rice porridge cooked with warm roasted green tea.
-
Warm Drinks from Vending Machines: Grab a hot canned coffee or warm corn potage from the vending machines lining the streets.

Tips & Tricks
-
Make the Most of Daylight: The sun sets early in winter (around 4:30–5:00 PM JST). Start your activities in the morning (around 8:00 AM).
-
Check Temple Operating Hours: Some exhibition areas or enclosed gardens within the Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha complexes close earlier (usually at 4:30 PM).
-
Layering System: Wear thermal underwear (Heattech), a sweater/flannel shirt, and a thick windproof down jacket.
-
Winter Accessories: Bring a scarf, touchscreen gloves, a beanie, and disposable hand warmers (kairo).
-
Footwear: Wear warm, non-slip walking shoes that are easy to slip on and off, as many temples require you to remove your shoes before entering.
-
Use Kintetsu Railway: Kintetsu-Nara Station is closer to Nara Park and the main tourist attractions than JR Nara Station (saving about 10–15 minutes of walking).
-
Get a Kintetsu Rail Pass / ICOCA: Use a contactless IC card for easy travel between cities (from Kyoto or Osaka to Nara).
