Season Guide
Autumn in Nara
Autumn in Nara is truly magical. The combination of ancient temples, friendly deer, and colorful leaves (koyo) creates a tranquil yet enchanting atmosphere. Here's a complete guide to your visit to Nara in autumn.

Weather
In general, autumn in Nara offers a refreshing transition from the lingering heat of summer to the sharp chill of the end of the year:
-
September: Temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C. The lingering heat of summer lingers, with a high potential for rain due to the typhoon season.
-
October: Temperatures are ideal at 14°C to 22°C. Skies are usually clear and the air begins to cool, making it comfortable for a day of walking.
-
November: Temperatures drop to 8°C to 16°C. The air is cool and dry, marking the peak of leaf color (koyo) before winter sets in.
Activities
Nara offers a blend of nature and history that's hard to beat. Here are some of the best spots:
-
Nara Park: The city's main icon. You can see deer relaxing under yellowing ginkgo trees or reddening maples. Don't forget to buy shika-senbei (deer crackers) for about 200 yen.
-
Todai-ji Temple: Home to a giant bronze Buddha statue. The area around the temple boasts numerous maple trees that turn a deep red in mid-November.
-
Isuien Garden: A serene Japanese-style garden. Here, you can enjoy the view of autumn leaves reflected in the pond with Mount Wakakusa in the background.
-
Kasuga Taisha Shrine: Famous for its thousands of lanterns. The path to the shrine is surrounded by a forest, creating a truly idyllic atmosphere in autumn.
-
Tanzan Jinja (Nara Area): If you have more time, this shrine has a 13-story wooden pagoda surrounded by over 3,000 maple trees. This is one of the most beautiful autumn spots in the Kansai region.

Tips & Tricks
-
Best Time: Peak red leaf color (koyo) in Nara typically occurs in mid-November to early December.
-
Clothing: Layer. In the mornings and evenings, temperatures can drop significantly, so bring a light jacket or scarf, even if it's warm during the day.
-
Avoid Crowds: Nara is very popular on weekends. If possible, visit on a weekday and arrive at Nara Park before 9:00 a.m. for a quieter atmosphere.
-
Deer Etiquette: While cute, the deer in Nara are wild. Don't tempt them with food without offering it, as they can become aggressive (heading or biting at your clothes).
-
Access: From Osaka or Kyoto, the easiest way is to take the Kintetsu Line. Kintetsu-Nara Station is much closer to the park and major temples than JR Nara Station.
