Weather

  • Winter in Shirakawa-go lasts from late December to early March. During this period, the village is covered in thick snow.

  • Temperature: Average temperatures can be quite cold, ranging from -6°C to 1°C, and can drop even further.

  • Winter Light-Up: If you want to see Shirakawa-go with its illuminated houses, come during the nighttime illumination event. This event is held several times during the winter. However, it is very popular and the number of visitors is limited. You must book a tour or accommodation in the village well in advance to enter.

Activities

  • Explore the Village: Take a leisurely stroll through the village and admire the unique architecture of the gassho-zukuri houses, designed to withstand heavy snow.

  • Shirakawago Viewpoint (Shiroyama Observatory): Head to this observatory for the most iconic panoramic views of the snow-covered village. You can walk or take a paid shuttle bus.

  • Visit a Traditional House: Several gassho-zukuri houses, such as the Wada House and Kanda House, are open to the public as museums. You can learn about the history, culture, and daily life of the villagers for an entrance fee of around 300 yen.

  • Enjoy Local Cuisine: Sample local specialties like Hida beef and gohei mochi (rice cakes covered in sweet sauce).

  • Where to Stay: Stay in one of the gassho-zukuri houses that double as inns (ryokan). This is a great way to experience the village atmosphere at night and enjoy the village without the tourist crowds. However, reservations must be made well in advance as rooms are very limited.

  • Hot Springs (Onsen): After a long day of walking around in the cold snow, soaking in a hot spring (onsen) can be a truly enjoyable experience.

Tips & Tricks

  • Warm Clothing: It's mandatory to bring layers of clothing, a thick jacket, gloves, a scarf, a hat, and waterproof shoes with deep treads to avoid slipping on snowy and icy roads.

  • Reservations: Book transportation, accommodations, or tour packages well in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the Winter Illumination.

  • Visiting Hours: Most tourist areas in the village are open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You are not allowed to explore the village after 5:00 PM unless you are staying overnight.

  • Deai-bashi Bridge: This suspension bridge is often covered in snow, making walking on it dangerous. Exercise caution, especially if you are bringing small children or strollers.

  • Maps and Information: Visit the official website or tourist information center for maps and up-to-date information on road and weather conditions.
