Summer in Shirakawa-go

Famous for its traditional thatched-roof houses, Shirakawa-go is most often imagined covered in deep snow. However, summer offers a different and unique beauty with lush green countryside views, rice fields starting to fill, and warmer weather, ideal for exploration. Here is your guide to a summer vacation in Shirakawa-go:

Weather

  • Cooler than the Big City: Despite its hot and humid weather, Shirakawa-go, located in the mountains, often has slightly cooler temperatures and gentle breezes than large cities in the lowlands like Tokyo or Osaka.

  • Nighttime Variations: Temperatures can drop slightly at night, making for a more comfortable atmosphere, especially if you’re staying at a traditional minshuku.

  • Summer Monthly Temperature Outlook:

    • June: Average temperature 18∘C-25∘C. Early summer, relatively cool.

    • July: Average temperature 22∘C-29∘C. Temperatures start to rise, feeling warm and humid.

    • August: Average temperature 24∘C-31∘C. Hottest and most humid month.

Activities

  • You might find small local events or Bon Odori dancing if you visit during the Obon period (mid-August).

  • Enjoy Iconic Greenery: Head to the Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck (Shiroyama Viewpoint) for a panoramic view of the gassho-zukuri village covered in greenery.

  • Explore Traditional Houses: Step inside the Wada House and Kanda House to understand their unique architecture and lifestyle. You can also visit the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen Open Air Museum to see examples of relocated houses.

  • Take a Walk: Cross the Deai Suspension Bridge for a different view of the river and village. Also enjoy strolling along the green countryside paths.

  • Taste Local Cuisine: Don’t miss delicious dishes like Hida Beef and Shirakawa-go’s signature Soba noodles.

  • Try Water Activities: If you’re interested, try SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) at Lake Hakusui, usually available from June to September.

Tips & Tricks

  • Book Early: Accommodation (especially minshuku) and bus tickets are limited and sell out quickly. Book well in advance, ideally 3-4 months in advance.

  • Light Clothing & Rain Protection: Bring comfortable, light, and breathable clothing as summers tend to be warm and humid. Always have a foldable umbrella or light raincoat with you due to the rainy season.

  • Hydration & Sun Protection: Make sure you always have a water bottle with you. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also essential to protect yourself from sunburn.

  • Comfortable Shoes: Wear comfortable walking shoes as you will be exploring the village a lot.

  • Beware of Mosquitoes: Bring mosquito repellent as the rural areas may be full of these insects.

  • Respect Local Privacy: Remember that Shirakawa-go is a residential village. Do not trespass on private property or disturb the locals.

  • Enjoy the Morning/Evening: Arrive in the morning or stay overnight to experience a quieter village atmosphere before or after the daytime crowds.
